Trip Report for February 2008
Day 3
Today was a chance for Phillip to take a rest from driving as we were taken around by Omar (mark 2) who was to take us to Tendaba next day in his mini-bus. We had another excellent morning’s birdwatching at Brufut Woods. We had hardly arrived when Mustapha and one of the resident guides found us a pair of roosting White-faced Scops Owls. As we walked down the track we had good views of a Red-shouldered Cuckoo Shrike and shortly afterwards found a pair of Verraux’s Eagle Owl. Bearded Barbet and Vieillot’s Barbet provided beautiful splashes of colour, but perhaps the most moving sightings of the morning were first three roosting Long-tailed Nightjars and, a short distance away, a female Standard-winged Nightjar.
In the afternoon our first stop was on the coast at Tanji. The weather was slightly overcast but this didn’t prevent us having a superb lesson from Mustapha in identifying a large range of gulls and terns. From there we journeyed down the coast to Teujering. The mixed habitat of scrubby bushes and dead trees brought us good views of a variety of birds including Lizard Buzzard, Dark Chanting Goshawk, a Lesser Kestrel and a Senegal Batis.Species seen...
