Trip Report for February 2008

Day 1

We set off at 7.30 heading for Kotu Bridge. Having read so much about this area, it certainly didn’t disappoint; before long we were grinning like children let loose in a sweet shop. Not only did we see a good variety of birds within the first half hour, but we saw them in numbers with very good views. Our first sighting was of 3 Pied Kingfishers sitting on the line in front of us, closely followed by 8 Blue bellied Rollers, Jack Snipe and Greater Painted Snipe in the same view and a family of 5 Grey Woodpeckers on the Casino Cycle track. We ended our walk surrounded by a party of Little Bee Eaters in the rice fields. The varied habitats brought us a good selection of herons, waders, hawks as well as a host of smaller birds.

We returned to Halcyon for a swim and a light lunch. We all appreciated this format that gave you a chance of a rest during the heat of the day. In the afternoon we set off for more good birding on Fajaro golf course. The highlights were splendid views of a pair of African Harrier Hawks, a Pearl spotted Owlet that responded to Mustapha’s calls and excellent views of a Grey Headed Kingfisher. We returned tired, but happy for supper. (The daily menu provided a good choice of freshly cooked food – the fish and the prawns being particularly good). Then, just as we were heading for bed a Barn Owl paid a fleeting visit.
