Tendaba Camp
After an early breakfast the drive to Tendaba will offer a great variety of wildlife as you travel inland.
Hadada Ibis may be seen in the rice fields and occasional stops may bring sights of Booted Eagle, Village Indigobird, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, African Yellow White-Eye, Black Rumped Waxbill and White-backed Vulture among the many species possible.
Near Tendaba you may even be lucky enough to spot the unmistakable profile of the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill.
Once at Tendaba Camp there will be the opportunity to explore one of the creeks that penetrates deep into the mangrove forest. With the motor cut and drifting quietly you may hear and see Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Mouse-brown Sunbird, Fairy-blue Flycatcher, Spur-winged Goose and Wooly-necked Stork.
An evening meal and good night's sleep will refresh you for the next day, when you will drive a short way to Tendaba Airfield. A walk through scrub will produce good sightings and may include Stone Partridges, Zitting Cisticola, Green Backed Eremomela, Brubru and White-rumped Seedeater. Red Patas Monkeys are also found in the area.
After leaving the airfield you will set off for Farafenni and on the way you may see Northern Carmine Bee-eater and European Bee-eater. Waiting for the ferry can be productive too - Winding Cisticola may be heard and even seen in the reeds nearby.
Reaching the opposite of the River Gambia you will continue towards Kaur Wetlands, with more birding stops along the way.
On arrival at Kaur you will be treated to sights of many waders, which will hopefully include the beautiful Egyptian Plover - a target bird for many! There may also be Kittlitz's Plover, Collared Pratincole and Little Stint amongst others.
Leaving Kaur and Tendaba you will begin the return journey to Halcyon Gambia. It will be a long day, with stops providing opportunities to more sightings of birds in the fields and scrub along the way.
