Giant Kingfisher

Abuko Nature Reserve

In 1968 Abuko was established as the first protected Nature Reserve in The Gambia, an oasis of evergreen forest and tranquil forest pools.

With a bird list of over 200 species Abuko offers great opportunities to see many varieties in a comparatively small area. Here you will find some of the richest birding in the entire country.

Regularly seen are Woodland Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Coucal, Palm-nut Vulture, Giant Kingfisher, Violet Turaco and Green Turaco, Pygmy Kingfisher and the elusive Western Bluebill.

Crocodiles and Red Colobus monkeys are amongst the variety of creatures also to be found here at Abuko.
